Cheer’s Proudest Moment

September 1st, 2009 by Erin Skarda – Comments (1)

All I can say is WOW! We just received word from our friends at UCA that cheerleaders across the country have risen to and exceeded the challenge that was offered earlier this year—to collectively contribute 90,909 hours of community service before National School Spirit Day, which is next Wednesday, 9/9/09.

When I heard that this lofty challenge had been met and surpassed, I have to say I wasn’t surprised. After all, here at American Cheerleader, we meet so many unbelievably talented and driven cheerleaders who are role models and leaders in their communities. Nonetheless, this news brought a big smile to my face, as I thought about the headlines that this accomplishment will receive (I’m looking forward to seeing the positive press roll in).

To every squad and every cheerleader out there who has contributed to their communities and helped make this movement a successful, thank you. Because in those acts of kindness and selflessness, you’ve done more than help those in need—you’ve created a better world for everyone who lives in it and affected the positive image of cheerleaders that will live on for generations. Be proud of yourselves. I hope more young people will follow in your footsteps. I know I will.

Cheerfully,

Erin

About Erin Skarda
I’m a Colorado girl who moved to New York City after graduating from Colorado State University in May 2006 with a degree in technical journalism. I grew up in a Denver suburb where I attended private school for 13 years. I participated in every activity imaginable as a kid—dance, gymnastics, softball, basketball, choir, karate—but fell in love with cheerleading when I joined my high school squad. I was named captain of JV my freshman and sophomore years, and co-captain of Varsity my senior year. Being part of a team taught me a lot growing up, and now I’m super excited to work with a group of amazing editors (and former cheerleaders!) here at AC.
