Reality TV confessions

October 16th, 2009 by Jessica Pribush – Comments (1)

The cast of The Hills have become overnight celebrities by allowing MTV to broadcast their lives on TV.

The cast of "The Hills" has become overnight celebrities because of the explosive popularity of reality TV.

I must (somewhat ashamedly) admit, reality TV shows rule my DVR. From “The Hills” to “The Real Housewives of New Jersey”, I’m a reality show junkie. There’s just something fascinating about watching other people live out their lives on camera that thoroughly entertains me.

When I sit back and think about what really pulls me in to these programs, I draw a blank. Could it possibly be that I relate with the issues they have? No, that can’t be it, being that I’m not a rich socialite, or a well-to-do housewife. Could it be the fact that their constant drama makes me feel better about my own life? Maybe I do appreciate the fact that I can make it through the day without having an argument with almost all of my closest friends or family members. When it comes down to it, I honestly can’t come to a distinct reason that pushes me to indulge in these shows every week.

I think the real reason that I remain faithful to these shows could be that I like the idea of a scripted reality. I know that my previous statement is an oxymoron, but I think most reality show viewers can relate. This so-called “reality” TV is pretty much modified versions of what is actually happening in the lives of the characters. If there wasn’t this fabricated “drama” these shows simply wouldn’t be as entertaining.

People tend to watch TV as an escape from everyday life. This escape entertains us and distracts us from the monotony of our own lives. The idea that these characters have a “reality” that is much more glamorous and eventful than our own is what keeps us tuned in every week.

Once believed to only be the latest fad, reality TV has proven that it may be here to stay. Commonly referred to as a “guilty pleasure” these programs have formed a very dedicated fan base. Along with this fan base, “reality stars” are born. By agreeing to be followed around by a camera crew and have their most private moments forever captured, these “normal people” are thrust into the spotlight.

Although I believe these shows to be scripted and strategically edited to obtain more viewers, they do prove to be extremely interesting. As long as reality shows continue to run, I will keep watching. Whether the drama is real or fake, I just can’t seem to get enough.

Brrr! It's cold out there! It's also very dry in the air, and dryness can suck up moisture, leaving your skin flaky, itchy and tight. Don't worry, though--- Atopalm's Moisturizing Body Lotion is the perfect remedy for a cold, dry winter blast!
