The Grudge (2004)
directed by Takashi Shimizu; starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jason Behr & Clea DuVall; Rated PG-13
*This movie may not be suitable for kids under the age of 13
You may be wondering why The Grudge is in my lineup, but The Ring isn’t. To this I say…well, I just wasn’t a fan of The Ring. Now, what really got my heart racing was this gem of a remake starring one of my favorite actresses of all time (High-fives to other “Buffy” fans!), Sarah Michelle Gellar. The Grudge takes place in Tokyo and centers around an American nurse who comes to take care of an elderly woman living in a home nearby. Odd things start to happen around the house and as Sarah Michelle’s character starts to research the place, she finds out it was the site of a murder many years before. Well, the victim still haunts the home and is pretty pissed off and dead-set on getting her revenge.
WHY IT’S SCARY: This film is a remake of the original japanese horror film Ju-On. Both films were shot by the same director. The thing that makes it so creepy is that this is based off of folklore and legends in the Japanese culture. Also, the fact that there really isn’t a lot of gore and that the movie really just plays on the thriller aspect is almost more realistic than the spraying blood and guts scenes we’re used to seeing.

Here, Kitty, Kitty....
SCARIEST SCENE(S): Whenever the ghost girl makes that croaking sound; When the boy’s in the closet, when he meows like a cat, when he’s outside the elevator…the kid’s just plain creepy; The worst is when she shows up under the covers of the woman hiding in bed!
SCARY STORY: I had nightmares about this, but mostly anytime I hear the croaking sound, it makes me very paranoid that someone/something’s going to show up around the next corner to get me.
FUN & FREAKY FACTS:
* The open-mouthed croaking sounds that came from the ghost girl were made by director Takashi Shimizu.
* The little ghost boy is almost always found with his cat in the film. The boy who played the character in the movie was actually terrified of cats.
* Before filming, the cast and crew performed a ceremony to bless them and make sure nothing bad would happen to them during filming

Anyone home?
