My first AC photo shoot!

November 13th, 2009 by Jessica Pribush – Comments (0)

When I started at American Cheerleader in September, I figured I would be performing typical, monotonous, intern tasks—filing, coffee runs, etc.—but boy was I wrong. Here at AC, I get to work with the best people, while actually helping out with the production of the mag. Not only do I get to contribute my writing and ideas, I actually got the chance to model for the next issue!

Arriving at a photo shoot a few weeks ago, I was in complete intern mode. I introduced myself to the photographer and make-up artist and let them know that if they needed anything, I was there to help. As the models started to arrive, I made sure they were comfortable and offered them breakfast. I then helped lay out the accessories for the looks, while associate Editor Erin Skarda, hung up the clothes. Next, I chatted with the models and found out a little about their cheer backgrounds, and told them about mine. It wasn’t until the make-up artist called me over to her chair that it donned on me that I was a model, too.

I was so excited to get my hair and makeup done, since I’ve never had the star treatment before. As I watched her “put on my face,” I got to see the detailed process it takes to get models looking their best. I even wore concealer for the first time! My transformation was awesome, I almost didn’t recognize myself.

Once my first look was complete, it was time to put on the clothes and start shooting. The whole room watched as we hit poses directed to us by the photographer. I must admit I was extremely nervous. But, once we started getting into it, we were grooving to the music and even trying our own poses.

After that set was done, it was back into hair and makeup. Let’s just say this look was a lot more dramatic. After putting on my next outfit—which I absolutely loved—I hit a bunch of poses that seemed straight out of Vogue. It was so cool to be treated like a real model, and put the tips from America’s Next Top Model to good use.

While the other girls got their time in front of the camera, I went back into hair and makeup, this time for a colorful all-star look. As I watched the models pose for potential covers, it sparked my inspiration. These girls are all current cheerleaders, and I wanted to embody their spirit in my stock shots.

After a lunch break, it was right back to shooting. We started with stock shots—visuals that help enhance the articles in the mag—where I got to sport both classic and edgy cheer looks. When the stock shots were over, it was back to reality, and my job as an intern.

The other models took the last of their shots, while we put away all the clothes. We quickly looked at some of the final shots, and the day came to a close. Although it was a lot of work, watching everything come together from start to finish was absolutely incredible. The accomplishment you feel when it’s successful is a feeling you’ll never forget.

My overall experience at the photo shoot was irreplaceable. I had so much fun interacting with all of the professionals, as well as the models, and of course, the AC staff. The pictures turned out beautiful, and I believe the next issue will prove to be one of the best! I truly appreciate all of the amazing things I get to experience while interning here, and I’m learning more and more everyday!

Cheers, Jessica<3
