What’s Your Turkey Day Tradition?

November 26th, 2009 by Kathleen Hager – Comments (0)

Happy Thanksgiving!

I absolutely love the holidays. I feel like Thanksgiving catapults me into Christmas, and I love it. From the moment my family starts readying the house for our Turkey Day guests, I get into such a holiday spirit! Who doesn’t look forward to their holiday traditions?

Every year, my Aunt Carol and Uncle Dave can’t make Thanksgiving Day, so we started a tradition years ago that we would get together the Saturday following Turkey Day to have leftovers and play games (I kill them all in Cranium!). It’s so much fun and not a bit uptight. The only thing is, while we love it, the name we came up with is a little gross. But we refuse to change it. I can’t wait for this year’s Thanksgiving Regurgitated! (Don’t judge us.)

See what the rest of the AC staff adores about this wonderful holiday!

“My absolute favorite thing about Thanksgiving (well, in addition to all the amazing food) is watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Every year, my mom and I would watch the parade while preparing for the big feast. (And as soon as it ends, we pop in a cheesy holiday musical or sappy old black and white movie until everything is in the oven.) I love everything about the parade, from the amazing floats, Broadway numbers and the Rockettes to the marching bands, cheerleaders and dancers—and I never, ever miss the big finale with Santa. Since I moved to New York City, I’ve come to appreciate this tradition even more. This year, I’m bring the fam to the parade–we’ll be watching it up close and personal from the NYC sidewalks!” –Marisa Walker, Editor in Chief

“Of course, the food at Thanksgiving is always awesome (mine is now gluten-free, so it looks and tastes a little different than my holidays in the past, but it’s still yummy), but it’s what we do AFTER Thanksgiving that I truly love. After we eat dinner, my family always watched a holiday movie. Whether it was The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, A Christmas Story or The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, I always liked laying back on the floor or couch, hanging with the fam, feeling completely stuffed and just gearing up for the holidays.

And then of course, I’m a big fan of Black Friday—Otherwise known as THE biggest shopping day of the year (the day after Thanksgiving). When I was in college, my mom used to wake me up at 5AM and we’d go wait for all the stores to open up. That was always some really fun bonding time for us. Look out for my blog on Friday for ideas on where to shop to get the best deals!” –Brittany Geragotolis, senior editor

“Since I’ve been living in New York for the last three years, I haven’t been able to make it home to Colorado for Thanksgiving. But when I reflect on what Turkey Day was like during my childhood, I immediately think about my grandmothers—Ga and Nana. Both were born on November 25, so Thanksgiving to me always brings back memories of celebrating their birthdays, either right next door to my Mom’s house in Colorado (with Ga) or in my Dad’s hometown of Clovis, NM (with Nana). Although both these wonderful women passed away while I was in college, I’ll never forget all the amazing holidays I got to spend with them—and of course, all the delicious food we ate!” –Erin Skarda, associate editor

So, what are your holiday traditions? Comment on my blog and let me know!

Have a wonderful, safe and filling Thanksgiving holiday.

About Kathleen Hager
I grew up a small town girl with a big personality. Born and raised in Jim Thorpe, PA (you’ve never heard of it because it’s that tiny), I was always super outgoing and made (and still make) a lot of noise with my big mouth, which made cheerleading the logical love of my life. Jumping up and down yelling on a football field in front of lots of people—perfect. Maybe that’s what cheerleading felt like at 7 years old, but throughout junior high and high school, it became what taught me how to challenge myself, where I met my best friends and where I genuinely felt talented and special. After earning a journalism degree at Temple University and eventually making the big move from Philly to NYC, I’ve gotten a chance to open a new cheer chapter in my life with AC!

Brrr! It's cold out there! It's also very dry in the air, and dryness can suck up moisture, leaving your skin flaky, itchy and tight. Don't worry, though--- Atopalm's Moisturizing Body Lotion is the perfect remedy for a cold, dry winter blast!
