Nothing beats spending time with your best friend. The picture-perfect summer would include hanging out at the mall, having sleepovers and staying up all night talking, taking a fun road trip and seeing each other every day. But what happens when your best friend lives on the other side of the country?
My best friend, Jordan, grew up in the neighborhood next to mine and as soon as we met we were inseparable. After graduation, she moved to San Diego, California. I was devastated when she left, but we promised that no matter where we lived, we would always be BFF’s. After several years, we’ve managed to stay super close even though we live on opposite coasts.
Here’s how we do it!
Texting─ Jordan and I both keep our cell phones close by so anytime I have a short message I can shoot her a quick text anytime I want. Texting is a great way to let her know I miss her or to get a quick update on her and her boyfriend.
Phone Calls─ When the message is too long to text, I can always call her. California time is way behind ours (three hours to be exact,) so I try not to call her too early in the morning. Anytime I have a funny story or need to vent, the first thing I do is call Jordan.
Facebook─ Facebook is an awesome way to keep in touch with all of your friends, but it really helps keep long distance friendships tight. Jordan and I post on each other’s walls all the time about how much we miss each other. I can see all her updates and new pictures and when we’re both online we even chat!
Visits─ Nothing beats a big hug from your best friend at baggage claim when you haven’t seen her in ages. I flew out to Cali to spend a week with Jordan─ we surfed, explored LA and caught up. Jordan comes home as often as she can, and usually spends Christmas in Pittsburgh. We always pick up right where we left off and have a blast on our visits.
I miss my best friend a ton, but we’re still really tight! How do you and your best friends stay close? Comment below or e-mail me at choel@americancheerleader.com!
