Soon-to-be 18-year-old cheerleader (her birthday’s November 17th!) Marcy Smith is not your cookie-cutter teen. While some high school students are running around, getting into trouble, chasing after boys, and worrying about fitting in among their peers, Marcy’s busy volunteering for organizations like Relay For Life, Toys for Tots, Angel Tree, Special Olympics and UNICEF, while holding down a near-perfect GPA and winning national titles with her cheer squad at Bob Jones HS in Madison, AL. And most recently, she was able to check “Become AC’s Cheerleader of the Month” off her to-do list.
Read on for more about Marcy felt winning the honor of COM, what she’s been up to since and her advice on how you, too, can end up on top!
AC: How does it feel to be AC’s December Cheerleader of the Month?
Marcy: I’m so happy! I wish everyone could have a moment like this—it’s so thrilling and humbling. I never thought in a million years that I’d actually be the cover girl for American Cheerleader magazine.
AC: What was your reaction when you found out?
Marcy: It didn’t seem real—I was speechless for a moment, then I ran through the house to tell my mom the great news! We hugged each other and jumped up and down for a while.
AC: Did you ever think you’d be our cover girl?
Marcy: I never thought in a million years that I’d be selected Cheerleader of the Month. Coming to New York City and meeting all of the great people at AC was awesome. I feel so honored to have the chance to be an American Cheerleader cover girl.
AC: What was the shoot in NYC like?
Marcy: The photo shoot was truly a once in a lifetime experience! I’d never visited New York before, so it was especially exciting to be part of a professional photo shoot on my first visit to the Big Apple! New York City is absolutely fabulous; I loved everything about it—the people, the food, the sights, the shopping…everything!
AC: What have you been up to since the shoot?
Marcy: I’ve been extremely busy with school, cheerleading, dance and life in general. I’ve visited some colleges and am very happy to say that I’ve been accepted to the college of my choice—Auburn University. Go War Eagles!
AC: What’s up next for you?
Marcy: My cheer squad is starting to practice our routine full-out and it’s getting me super pumped for competition. The regional and state cheer competitions are in November, so it’s full speed ahead with practice! The Bob Jones football team is having a terrific season,
so we hope to be cheering for state play-off games (Go Patriots!). My birthday is in November and I’m excited to turn 18. This is such an amazing time in my life; I’m enjoying every moment and looking forward to the future. Whatever it is, I know it’s all in God’s plan.
AC: Any advice you have for other COM hopefuls?
Marcy: To all the great cheerleaders out there, “Just go for it!” Be your best self, get involved in your community, promote school spirit and keep a smile on your face. You may just be the next Cheerleader of the Month!
AC: What do you want to say to all your fans?
Marcy: Just remember, you’re a great cheerleader and cheerleading is for leaders—so do your best and be your best, not just in cheer, but in every aspect of your life. If you can dream it, you can do it, because dreams really do come true!
