The word fierce doesn’t even begin to describe Adrianna David. Add fun, unique, outgoing, loud and adventurous and maybe you’ll get a little closer to defining this 16-year-old junior from Academy of the Holy Cross in Kensington, MD. Whether it’s earning a spot on the famed F5 team at Maryland Twisters on her first try, her flair for funky fashion or her penchant for adrenaline-pumping extracurricular activities, Adrianna’s definitely giving Tyra a run for her money.
In fact, the Rockville, MD, native is no stranger to pushing the limits—be it in cheer or in life. Over the past 12 years, she’s steadily risen up the ranks of each of her all-star teams, finally ending up on top at Twisters. She accomplished a similar feat when she climbed to the summit of Mt. Shasta. Though she admits both are incredible achievements, living her life full-throttle is second nature for her.
Now Adrianna’s adding Cheerleader of the Month to that list of firsts and is more than happy to take on the challenging task of becoming a national role model. But don’t worry, her short time on F5 has already prepped her for the spotlight. “The fame that comes along with being on this team is definitely a change for me,” says Adrianna. “We were on YouTube 10 minutes after performing at our first competition of the season, as well as in a thread on The Fierce Boards, and uploads of our new uniforms showed up on Facebook. It’s almost like we were celebrities!”
Read on as Adrianna talks about what it means to live your life to the extreme and why she’s going big or going home. Kids, don’t try this at home.
AC: What do you love most about cheerleading?
Adrianna: Competing is by far the best thing about cheer. The stage, audience, watching all the other competitors, everyone done up—it’s all just so fun. Adrenaline is definitely the best feeling.
AC: What’s the best thing about being a cheerleader at Maryland Twisters?
Adrianna: Maryland Twisters’ reputation is one of the finest in the country. Compared to other gyms, it’s a lot more professional and organized. At competitions, the standards are set and we look unified and polished. Also, I’ve made a lot of new friends in the program.
AC: What’s your favorite part of a routine?
Adrianna: My two favorite parts are dancing and stunting. I love to perform in the dance and transitioning aspects of our routines. And in my opinion, stunting is one of the hardest and most impressive parts of competitive cheerleading.
AC: Of all your accomplishments, what are you most proud of?
Adrianna: I think I’m most proud of making it to the summit of Mt. Shasta. That’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. To be able to say I made it to the top of a 14,964-foot mountain at age 16 makes me very proud.
AC: You’ve gone white water rafting and even climbed Mt. Shasta! What is it about taking things to the limit that you really like?
Adrianna: I do love doing adventurous things, but I haven’t always been like this. My adventurous side was sparked when I started attending JH Ranch, a camp in California that I go to every summer. But I’ve always loved roller coasters and thrill-rides. I want to bike 109 miles to the Pacific Coast this summer and go sky-diving in the future. Also, I’m terrified of scary movies!
AC: What things do you do in your spare time away from cheer?
Adrianna: I dive in the winter for my school. Diving has always been a hobby that I participate in each summer. It’s sort of easy for me and cheerleading’s been a big help in that. My school is known for our school spirit, but there’s no cheerleading squad. So, since I can’t cheer there, I love being able to dive to support my school!
ADRIANNA GETS CHATTY…
