All Access with Allison: Start of Summer
School’s out, and it’s officially SUMMER! I cannot believe it has almost been a month since I graduated from the University of Alabama and our All Girl team had its first practice weekend. Accomplishing both graduation and practices in the same weekend was a challenge, but it made my weekend so much more memorable as I got to spend time with both my family and new teammates.
For it being our first practice weekend, I must say that I am VERY impressed with what our team has accomplished so far. While it was only our second time working together, we improved our skills quickly and had the chance to work on harder stunts and pyramids. We even brushed up on our tumbling technique. To ensure that we were keeping up our skills, we were required to throw the same pass we did at tryouts.
The majority of the weekend was focused on goals. Brandon gave us very specific goals for tumbling and stunting for us to work on throughout the summer. We were also given a detailed workout plan to follow while we are away. With a combination of weights and cardio, I think that our trainers did an excellent job creating a fitness plan to help us achieve our goals for the upcoming year.
We also had the opportunity to meet a little boy named Pettus and his family to learn about a rare genetic condition called Williams Syndrome. One of the best parts about cheering at Alabama is that we have the opportunity to make a difference and impact lives by using cheerleading as a platform to raise awareness and help others. We all really enjoyed Pettus’ visit, and we learned a lot about him and other people affected by the same condition. During the month of May we helped to spread the word about it being Williams Syndrome Awareness Month.
As soon as our practice weekend ended, my summer became filled with UCA! I’ve been working camps and Summer Training sessions as a member of UCA Core Staff and have loved every minute! Working with UCA keeps me in shape and lets me meet so many other people who are just as passionate about cheerleading as I am. It’s such a great experience, and I really enjoy participating in UCA’s College Camp at the University of Alabama. It’s so fun to have the tables turned and go from being an instructor to being a camper again.
Well, it’s almost been a year since we first found out that we would be able to compete at UCA Nationals and already it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come. I know this year has great things in store for us, and it all begins with camp next month! Check in with me next time to hear all about our camp experience. ROLL TIDE!
