Summertime, NYC, AC and ME!

American Cheerleader magazine is the queen bee, the alpha male of cheerleading publications, and for the length of this summer, my ticket to greatness! AC (and everyone who works here) is incredibly awesome.

My name is Alex and I’m finishing up my first week as a summer 2008 intern here at the infamous American Cheerleader magazine! I could go through my entire life story—how I eat, breathe, sleep and now even WRITE cheerleading but I’m not one to state the obvious. I basically adore all things cheer (I’m sure you can relate), and all things journalism. It’s as simple (and sweet!) as that. I’ll be entering my junior year at St. John’s University this fall, here in the concrete jungle that is New York City. I’m studying communication arts and journalism in the hopes of someday working as a writer for a magazine such as AC (hint, hint)!

Northern Virginia is where I live but, as Thomas Fuller once said, “The soul is not where it lives, but where it loves”. That said, my soul loves and remains loyal to a small town known as Wahiawa, located on the island of Oahu in the great state of Hawai’i. I started cheering in the 8th grade, and have been obsessed ever since. My career went from club cheer to all-stars to high school and all the way to college. My love for cheer is so great that I still make my sister sit with me and watch YouTube videos of my favorite teams at Worlds and old episodes of “Cheerleader Nation”; what can I say? Appreciation is an art. On a serious note, the opportunity to combine my love of writing with my passion for cheerleading is an incredible gift and I’m so beyond happy to be working with some of the best minds in the industry for the next few months! Did I just do exactly what I said I wasn’t going to do (See 2nd paragraph above)?

I’m sure you’ll all come to know me by the end of this summer but I thought I’d throw some random facts in here just to make things spicy. Maybe later, I’ll test you guys and offer a prize! Free bids to Worlds! Paid trips to any Nationals! Okay not really, but it could be interesting to see how much you guys can remember:

—I was born into a military family (GO ARMY!) and have moved more than 11 times, to eight different states.
—My cousin was bothering some geese in a park one day (we told him to stop) and they chased him down the street.
—I have an intense passion for music. Feel free to chat with me about your favorite artists/bands!

You guys can reach me at aneason@americancheerleader.com. Keep in touch! You can ask questions, suggest cool music, blogs, food, cheer stuff, anything; believe me, nothing is too random. Be sure to check back and maybe I’ll mention you in a post!

Peace and love,
Alex
