Falling in love...

Despite the fact that my mother is from the city, I’ve never really been to Manhattan. (Ok, save one trip when I was two to see the Macy’s Santa that resulted in my crying hysterically.) Needless to say I was totally excited to move here. So much so that I actually started a list of things that I wanted to do and see during my time here. And it goes a little something like this (hit it):
• Get cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery.
• Try Pinkberry fro-yo.
• Have a hot dog from Papaya.
• Visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
• Eat at a real NY deli.
• Get a slice of true NY pizza.
• Have dinner in Little Italy.

Upon giving my list another glance, I realized that all I’d be taking home from NY would be a few extra pounds. So, somewhere between a bag of M&Ms and my third “Jon & Kate plus 8” re-run, I decided it was time to take advantage of the city’s pedestrian character. I started out by meeting my pal Portia, and after a Pinkberry pit-stop (did you really think I’d make it around the city without eating something?) we sauntered down 5th avenue. There, I saw the Paris Theater where Carrie Bradshaw saw Joie Pour Deux pour une. After that I came across the Plaza Hotel where Carrie ran into Big after his engagement party and decided that “maybe some women aren’t meant to be tamed…” Then I shook myself out of my “Sex and the City” haze and got in touch with reality.

My second trip was less “Carried” away. I caught wind of a sample sale being held by the fabulous Diane von Furstenburg and was there right after work. Not, of course, until after I got myself that hot-dog and got lost on the subway. Clearly I didn’t get the memo that a bunch of lines shared one track. In the end, I made the executive decision to walk it, and it turned out to be a great one. It was cool being swept up in the hustle and bustle of the city. As someone who thrives on energy, I could walk around these streets all day. I finally made it to the [ware] house of von Furstenberg where in another throng of people I found a saucy little black pencil skirt— for $40!! It was originally $175 or something. Thus began my love affair with Manhattan— I think it may be getting serious.

Well, back to work! But before I go, do any of you have suggestions for fun things to do while I’m in NY? I must get fully acquainted with my new love! Can’t wait to hear from you, you know where to find me: rdolan@americancheerleader.com
