The Quest for a Repeat
In May 2013, Varsity All Star hosted its Inaugural All Levels Championship, The Summit, at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, FL. The Summit was created to hold a definitive championship for all levels and was a huge success in its first year. The largest division at The Summit was Senior Small Level 3 with 28 teams competing. The Fierce Boas from Stars Vipers in Schertz, Texas entered the competition as the reigning Level 3 High Point champions of the NCA All Star Championship, and were on a mission to become the first ever Summit Champions in a stacked division. After performing two deduction free routines at The Summit, the Fierce Boas finished their season at the top, becoming the first ever Summit Champions in Small Senior 3.
After a wildly successful season, the Fierce Boas are looking to repeat as Summit Champions. This year’s team is almost completely new with only two returners from last year’s championship squad. Fifteen of the new squad members have been with the Stars Vipers’ gym for over five years, and Coach George Martinez is excited to get the season started with his new team. “They know what is expected of them and that they have big shoes to fill. They are on a whole different level with their expectations and their commitment to perfection,” Coach Martinez says. After last year’s victory, this team knows all eyes will be on them.
So what is a typical practice like for the defending champs? “We all come in with the same practice clothes and our hair up with a big bow. We jump in and warm up our stunts, tumbling, and we work on executing our routine the way our coach wants us to look at the first competition. We always end with our team chant and prayer,” veteran Sabrina Prince explains.
The Fierce Boas are looking to improve upon their jumps this year by setting aside extra time at practice to focus on their technique, as well as attending jump clinics in addition to their regular practices. Coach Martinez adds that he expects his team to “train and practice as if they were going to Nationals tomorrow even before the competition season begins.”
It’s this kind of commitment to perfection and preparation that has made the Fierce Boas a force to reckon with.
Be on the lookout for the Fierce Boas from Stars Vipers this year at UCA, NCA, Cheerpower and ACA Nationals! With their combined strength in the areas of stunts, pyramids and tumbling, this Small Senior Level 3 team is ready to defend their Summit title this season.
