Holiday Bonding

Q: What are some fun, holiday-themed activities I can do with my squad this month?

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but trying to get in the holiday spirit while putting everything you have into an intense competition season can be kind of difficult. However, as the holidays are in full swing, it’s important to take the time to celebrate with your teammates.

Holiday parties should be a staple during this season! They’re a fantastic way to get your mind off of your routine and reconnect with your fellow cheerleaders. My team takes one practice out of our regimen to to have a gift exchange party. We all draw numbers and pick gifts in order from 1 to 24. When it’s your turn, you can grab a new gift or steal one someone has already taken. You’d be surprised just how competitive it gets when someone swipes heated slippers from another girl!

While a team party is a fun way to celebrate, there are many other ways your team can come together this season. As my favorite movie Elf puts it, “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!” That’s right, head out around the neighborhood wearing tacky holiday sweaters and go caroling. You’ll all get a great kick out of it and your neighbors will surely remember the most jolly (and maybe slightly off key) cheer team around when it’s time to fundraise again.

Some of the teams in my area take a charitable approach and sell candy canes for a cause or even put together a holiday feast at a homeless shelter. Whatever you do with your team this year, use it as a bonding experience to get your thoughts away from the heat of competition season and focus on what the holidays are all about!
